Madagascar is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. More than 80 percent of its species of plants and animals are found nowhere else on the planet. However, the island has lost much of its original forest cover, mainly as a result of slash-and-burn agriculture, known locally as tavy. This practice involves cutting down an area of forest, burning it and then using the cleared land for growing crops such as rice. After a few years, the soil becomes exhausted and the farmer moves on to a new patch of forest, leaving degraded land behind.
As the forests shrink, the island's wildlife suffers. Numerous species of lemurs, birds and reptiles are endangered. But it is not just the charismatic species that are affected. Bats, which are less well known but equally important, are also under threat. Madagascar has about 45 species of bats, all of which are indigenous, and they play a crucial role in the island's ecosystems. Some are pollinators, others disperse seeds, and many feed on insects that would otherwise become pests.
Ricardo Rocha, a biologist from the University of Lisbon, has been studying the impact of deforestation on Madagascar's bat populations. His research has revealed some surprising findings. Some people consider bats to be unclean animals. These negative attitudes can lead to bats being persecuted, with people deliberately destroying bat roosts or killing individual animals.
Rocha and his colleagues are working to change these perceptions. They have launched education programmes in rural communities, explaining the benefits that bats provide. They have also been working with local people to protect bat roosts, particularly in buildings such as houses and churches where bats often shelter. The researchers hope that by demonstrating the economic value of bats, they can persuade farmers to tolerate and even encourage these animals on their land.
The challenge is significant. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, and many farmers struggle to produce enough food for their families. Persuading them to value bats when they have more immediate concerns about food security is not easy. But Rocha believes that highlighting the role of bats in controlling crop pests could be a powerful argument for conservation. If farmers can see that bats are helping to protect their harvests, they may be more willing to protect the bats in return.

The villagers continued to work primarily in traditional occupations: farming, spinning yarn, and weaving cloth. Their incomes remained low, and many were forced to emigrate in search of better opportunities. Ogilvie found that the descendants of Wildberg's educated population were no more prosperous than their ancestors had been.

In societies where individuals are free to start businesses, move to where the jobs are, and keep the rewards of their efforts, education can indeed be a powerful driver of prosperity. But in societies where these freedoms are restricted, education may have little economic impact. This finding has important implications for modern development policy, which often focuses heavily on building schools and increasing enrolment without paying enough attention to the broader institutional environment. In some cases, governments have imposed a fine on parents who failed to send their children to school, without addressing the barriers that prevent educated people from finding productive employment.

Timur Gareyev is a chess grandmaster from Uzbekistan who has broken records for simultaneous blindfold chess. In blindfold chess, the player cannot see the board or pieces and must keep track of all the positions in their head. In 2016, Gareyev played 48 games of blindfold chess simultaneously at the University of Las Vegas, winning 35, drawing seven and losing only six. This remarkable feat required him to keep track of more than 1,500 pieces across 48 boards, all from memory.
Gareyev learned to play chess at the age of six in his home city of Tashkent. He showed exceptional talent from an early age and quickly progressed through the ranks of competitive chess. By his teens, he was already a strong international player. He moved to the United States to study and play chess, eventually settling in Arizona.
